In 1907, WDM (Murray) Glaister, a young solicitor of 29, established his sole practice in the McKenzies building, not far from our current offices. His small office was lit by gas lamps, and in winter heated by a coal fire. In summer, despite the heat, Glaister and his clients adhered to the dress code of "mother England", with many layers of formal clothes.
As Auckland rapidly expanded with an influx of immigrants, so did the need for legal services, especially in property conveyancing. Glaister assisted land developers with subdividing the close-packed suburbs of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn (now chic inner-city areas) for workers’ housing, and with developing substantial villas in Parnell, Epsom, and Remuera for the city’s social and commercial leaders.
Throughout the early 20th century, Glaister Keegan embraced technological advancements such as the introduction of telephones. Our firm quickly adapted, though some older staff found the transition challenging. Legal documents required meticulous accuracy, as corrections were a laborious process without modern conveniences like digital editing.
Today, Glaister Keegan stands as a legal institution in Auckland, with 16 partners and nearly 80 staff occupying all four floors of Norfolk House. We proudly serve many of the original families from our early days, with clients spanning multiple generations. Our low staff turnover reflects our commitment to a supportive and engaging work environment.
We continue to lead in property law, advising on significant transactions like the purchase of the Deloitte Centre, the largest office tower acquisition in New Zealand. Embracing modern technology, our clients can now access their documents online, and property transactions are efficiently handled by e-dealing through LINZ. While the speed and methods of doing business have evolved, our dedication to accuracy and exemplary service remains unwavering.
As we look to the future, Glaister Keegan remains committed to upholding our client-centric values and leveraging the latest technologies to meet our clients' needs. Our long history is the foundation upon which we build, ensuring we continue to provide exceptional and personalised legal services for generations to come.
